The Aborigines are the indigenous people of Australia and account for about 2 percent of the country’s population, which equates to around 400,000.
The word Aborigine is derived from the Latin meaning, “original inhabitants.”

They are joined by strong ties and spiritual beliefs that tie them to nature.
They believe that they are one with the land and that their ancestors have even transitioned into different elements in the environment, like rivers or trees, where they remain alive spiritually.

Their history has been kept alive for thousands of years through storytelling, which has been passed down through each of the generations.

When British settlers first came to Australia, land and personal rights were taken away from the original inhabitants of the country.
The Australian natives were viewed as savage by the British.
They didn’t have any agriculture and they did not tame animals, so they survived on what nature provided.
Men would hunt larger animals, while women would hunt smaller animals and pick berries, dig for roots and find other sources of plant life for food.
In the 1970s, there was an equal rights movement which resulted in The Aboriginal Land Rights Act which passed in 1976.

Many Aborigines live in the outback, where they practice some of their original ways of life.
The children are taught about the rich history of their ancestors and the traditional way of living, even though they have modern day conveniences like cars and televisions.
The majority of Australian natives live in towns where the literacy rate is low and unemployment rates are high.
Drugs and alcohol are common problems that the people living in these towns face.
In the 1990s, the Australian government facilitated increased wages and welfare benefits for the Aborigines.

Even though there were originally 250 – 300 Aboriginal languages spoken, most Aborigines today speak English.
Australian Aboriginal English is spoken because there are still some original words and phrases used from the native languages.

Native artwork is a source of income for many Aborigines, so when you move to Australia, be sure to visit areas where you can see and purchase the artwork that is available.
In the Northern Territory of Australia, you can see original art from the country’s natives in Arnhem Land, Nourlangie and Ubirr.
The one-of-a-kind artwork is in the form of bark and rock paintings, sculpture, basket weaving and beadwork.

Music derived from this group of individuals is easily recognizable because of the low humming noise from the didgeridoo.
This didgeridoo is an instrument, which is made from bamboo, and is about five feet long.
It is used in formal ceremonies which can include funerals and circumcisions.

There are not a lot of tourist areas where you can see the traditional way of life for the Australian natives.
