Your prized possessions are in good hands with IntlMOVE.

When you move to Australia, you will want to follow business etiquette.

It is usually easy for Americans to adjust to the Australian way of doing business because most of the business cultural norms are the same.

However, the business culture in Australia differs slightly from the United States.

IntlMOVE has put together some tips for succeeding in Australian business world.

Clothes and Appearance

When you first move to Australia, you will want to dress more formally for the first few days of work.

If you notice that your officemates are dressing more casually, you can wear more casual clothes.

Men will typically wear a dark business suits and ties to important meetings.

Women will wear suits, dresses or a nice skirt and blouse.

Casual clothes might be appropriate for regular days at the office, but they are inappropriate for business meetings.

Office Behavior in Australia

Punctuality is very important in the business world in Australia.

Make sure to show up on time to work and to other work functions.

When you want to meet with someone in particular, it is important to set up an appointment.

When speaking to other people, maintain eye contact to show a sign of respect.

Giving gifts to business associates is not a common practice among Australians.

When greeting people, you will shake hands when meeting and when leaving.

You should always have a business card ready, as exchanging business cards is expected.

Business is almost always conducted on a first-name basis, as is customary in the United States.

In meetings, you should be friendly but direct.

Don’t beat around the bush too much, as this is considered rude.

There is no need to cultivate personal relationships before doing business.

If you are making a business presentation, avoid hype and misleading facts and figures.

Australians are very direct and make business decision on facts, not emotions.

When you give an Australian company a proposal, there should be little room for bargaining as this is not customary.

Negotiations can happen fast and will take place at the top of a company.

Dinner Invitations

When you have been invited to someone’s home for dinner, it is customary to bring wine, flowers or another small gift to show your appreciation.

If you are invited to a barbeque, you should usually arrive with wine or beer.

Make sure you show up on time, or no more than 15 minutes late for a larger party.

Contact the host ahead of the party to find out if you can bring a dish.

At the table, you hold your fork in your left hand and the knife in your right hand while eating.

Keep hands above the table while eating, but keep your elbows off the table.

If you are dining out, do not pay for a round of drinks out of turn, but make sure you pick up the tab when it is your time to pay.

Afternoon tea usually takes place around 4 p.m.

Your evening meal will sometimes be referred to as tea, and will take place between 6 and 8 p.m.

Supper is a late meal or a light snack.

IntlMOVE has put together some information on emigrating to Australia, but you can get more specific information at your embassy or consulate.

Australia is one of the most sought-after places to live in the entire world.

The weather, the people, the scenery and the culture are all reason enough to want to move to the “land down under.”

When deciding to make the move, there are several things you will want to do to make your dream a reality.

You can find many migration agents online who can give you an eligibility assessment.

Once they have determined your eligibility, you can move forward with the process.

The application process time varies, but can take 12 months or more.

You have to make sure that every document is filled out completely and every piece of information that is asked for is given.

Unless you have a firm job offer before you go, it could take some time to secure employment.

 Agencies

When you decide you want to move to Australia, there are several ways to look for jobs.

Australia is abundant with private employment agencies.

These agencies help find jobs for more than 100,000 people annually, so this is a good place to start.

These agencies can also help you find temporary employment, which can lead to more permanent employment.

There are four different types of agencies in Australia – personnel consultants, labor hire contractors, student employment services and employment agencies.

Personnel consultants, or head hunters, usually find managerial and executive positions.

Labor hire contractors help find employment for people who work in industrial areas.

Student employment agencies obviously help individuals in school find work.

Employment agencies can be specialized for a particular field or be more general.

Although there may be small registration fees involved, agencies usually get their money from employers.

 Qualifications for Working in Australia

To work in Australia, you must be able to read, write and communicate in English at a fluent level.

If you are an English speaker from a country where English is not the native language, you might be required to pass an English test.

Next, you will have to find out if your trade qualifications or skill set are recognized in Australia.

You must have formal education and work experience and you may be subject to testing.

You can research the Australian Standard Classification of Occupations (ASCO) to check the qualifications for a particular job.

 Obtaining a Work Visa

You may be able to obtain a temporary work visa to find employment.

However, if you want your move to Australia to be more permanent, you will likely have to land a more secure employment position.

When you do land your dream job in Australia, your new employer should be able to help you secure a working visa.

Research your different visa options with your consulate or embassy.

I wanted to write and let it be known that Gloria has been the most kind and compassionate I have ever dealt with.  I know she has gone way beyond the duty and time limit that is ordinar just to help me when I’m going through such a very rough time in my life. I want you to know what an asset she is to your company and how fortunte ou are to have her there. I have made so many mistakes figuring the numbers- living in a hotel for 2 weeks have made it difficult on me to get this all done, while continuing to work and make this move, but she has made it as easy as possible on me and I GREATLY appreciate all that she has gone out of her way to do for me. You are one lucky company to have such a gifted and talented employee who really cares for your customers. Please thank her for me one more time and should the need ever arise, I would like Gloria to handle everything for me, as she has been absolutely wonderful to me.
